JFiN (Jericho Families in Nature) held a "wild seed-saving walk and talk" at Mobbs with Tobi Schulmann the owner of Bird and Bees Native Plants (located in Jericho, Vermont), on November 4, 2023, at Mobbs Valley Farm and Trails.
Tobi pointed out various wild plants and informed us how to identify them. We talked about the different sizes of seeds, how they disburse, why the plants need to grow and shed so many seeds, and that many of the wild seeds need to overwinter on or in the cold ground before they can germinate.
Special shout out and thanks to Pete Davis, Mobbs committee chair, for permission to pick and collect (sustainably) some wild seeds on the Mobbs property.
"This is a book about a bad seed. A baaaaaaaaaad seed. How bad? Do you really want to know? He has a bad temper, bad manners, and a bad attitude. He’s been bad since he can remember! This seed cuts in line every time, stares at everybody, and never listens. But what happens when one mischievous little seed changes his mind about himself, and decides that he wants to be—happy?"
We also learned that The seed of an oak tree, the “nut,” is called an acorn.
According to the University of California data, only one acorn in 10,000 will grow up to be an oak tree.
Maybe he is not such a bad seed after all!
Comment from one of the guests: "Thank you again for helping to lead such a wonderful nature walk for all of us, in particular the kids. That is the second time we have gone and we really do love the experience and learn a lot." - JW
