National Gun Violence Awareness Day 2020

Friday, June 5
National Gun Violence Awareness Day

Wear Orange

Nearly summer temperatures in Vermont, yet I am wearing a winter orange hat. I (Bernie) wear orange because I feel gun violence must be objected to by a multitude of voices. Why would we want to remain silent while innocent people are maimed and killed? I wear orange to expand the awareness of the need to change our gun culture.

WNDC's Task Force to Prevent Gun Violence, together with the National Campaign (Everytown, Giffords, Brady, and others) supports the 6th National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 5. Moreover, as we face these challenging times of fighting both COVID-19 and gun violence, let's come together in solidarity on June 5th.

WNDC asks members and supporters for one simple act - to WEAR ORANGE on Friday and unite with all Americans in our goal of ending gun violence. The Wear Orange campaign has other suggested activities that you can do in your home or neighborhood at https://wearorange.org/go-orange/.

Orange has been the defining color of the gun violence prevention movement since 2013 when 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was shot and killed in Chicago - just one week after performing at President Obama’s 2nd inaugural parade in 2013. Her friends wore orange in her honor and, as a movement, we continue to do so.

Therefore, whether in the home or in our neighborhoods, #WEAR ORANGE on June 5th.

“A choir is made up of many voices, including yours and mine. If one by one all go silent then all that will be left are the soloists.

Don’t let a loud few determine the nature of the sound. It makes for poor harmony and diminishes the song.”
