Mayday Mayday

Mayday, Mayday, struck by a polar vortex, hope sinking fast, or more like frozen in place. Yesterday basking in 'promising' sun and a single shirt, jeans, baseball cap, and gardening gloves;  today running in place with dual shirts, corduroys, sweater, hat, winter gloves - The world keeps throwing us curve balls.

What the heck is a Polar Vortex anyway (batch of cold air that usually stays trapped in the artic) and who let it escape? And why did our Canadian friends not stop it at the border? Nothing else seems to be allowed through.

Don't anybody even think, never mind forecast snow on Memorial day lest you jinx us - hey it has happened before in recent history.

Busy, busy day in the garden today. Only unlike yesterday when we were watering peas, lettuce, garlic, and onions; today we are stitching together little cloth ear muffs for these hardy plants. Good thing Maeve had some material left over from mask making.

Mayday, Mayday, cry the early arriving hummingbirds, warblers, and other migrants.

Honeybees must be saying in their 'waggle dance', stay in, stay in, that white stuff got no nectar or pollen. Hardy native bees including bumblebees and Mason bees tough it out, so I guess, should I. Though I expect they don't like it any more than I do.

What's a poor fellow to do?
Peepers have gone silent, nothing but tiny bubbles, yet even those "*tiny bubbles make me happy, make me feel fine, tiny bubbles make me warm all over" - ok well maybe today it takes the woodstove to do that. *from the song lyrics of "Tiny Bubbles".

The early courageous, spirit-lifting flowers, whose heads were held high yesterday, today drop and bow in humble humility awaiting sun and warmth to once again let them rise and shine lifting us with them.

Like Vermonters, these tulips are hardy and will persevere.

Warm(?) embrace.
May or late October hmmm

Soon we will be biking and paddling again.

And some will be mowing grass

The Peepers will once again explode in song

                                                   Roosters will crow

       Skies will be blue

Winter scenes will once again be relinquished to postcards.

The outside will once again be more inviting than the inside .

Have faith, spring is just around the corner

Soon we will be able to see our bare feet in clover.

For today, I will praise our little indoor starter plants and give them all the encouragement I can.

Though it may look bleak out, the sunshine still comes through, the air is warming, life is emerging. Green will replace white, the polar vortex will go back to the artic, Vermonters will grow gardens, pollinators will pollinate - of this, we can be assured. With the possible exception of Memorial Day!

We are keeping the snow shovel and Christmas ornaments out just in case.

  2. The photos and your commentary as I scrolled down set my day. This morning I kept looking out a window to see how much the latest snow was melting, but that grew tiresome so I came on FPF only to see Bernie's latest. Great! Thank you!
