Mary Lacy of Jericho, VT celebrated Pollination with new artworks - paintings and glass mosaics during an opening reception and gallery display at Karma Birdhouse Gallery, in Burlington, Vermont on Jan. 18th, 2018.

The new series of original works is a celebration of pollination. I've been looking at mostly native Vermont pollinators and their co-evolving counterparts, flowers. The exhibit includes both paintings and glass mosaics. There is also a section that looks back at my cross country mural tour, Sept 2016-May 2017. ~Mary Lacy
The exhibit will be open at the Karma Birdhouse Gallery on 47 Maple Street, Burlington, VT from Jan 14- March 2nd, 2018
What I (Bernie Paquette) viewed: The previous mural work (by Mary Lacy) that I have viewed in Burlington on buildings and a silo impressed me with how art can be brought to places where the public can view at no cost and on their everyday travels and in a scale that draws our attention to detail. This new work does the same with new materials, new scale, and close up.
Analysis: This new series of artwork by Ms. Lacy uses different mediums (painted cut glass, grout, and acrylic on wood...) bringing out geometric dimension, and again colorful detail exposing us to the natural world in human-sized displays of what are normally small and often overlooked natural beauties. The geometric lines and contrasting colors create contrast and depth - like looking at a minuscule life form under a microscope, suddenly you see the parts and the whole that bring to life what otherwise went unnoticed. Light exudes from the background and in the various shades of a given color utilized in the object.
Interpretation: The sensory elements, the colors, cuts, angles, depth bring our focus as though we were holding the butterfly, flower, bee... in our hand, allowed us to at once view its overall beauty as well as its piecemeal components. The colors of the insects and flowers are shared, highlighting their dependency on each other.
Judgment: Ms. Lacy's pollination-themed art is timely as more and more people are both rightly concerned and interested in pollination, including the pollinators and their counterparts, flowers, and the plants that we eat. This exhibit is rewarding to view aesthetically, it is educational and motivates us to learn more about pollination and pollinators, and perhaps helps grow our appreciation for pollinators and the flowers and plants that they help insure may continue to grow.
I look forward to watching Mary Lacy's artwork continue to expand both in theme and materials, and also in its community outreach, for general public participation and education regarding nature. Perhaps her work will help us all to Stop, Look, and Listen to our natural world.

In addition to the opening, there will be an event focusing on Pollination itself. It will be on February 25th, a Sunday, from 4:30-6:30 and will include:
- Speakers from both UVM's Gund Institute and The Farm Between in Jeffersonville, VT. (Charlie Nicholson and John Hayden.)
- Bee Barn-making activity. Each guest will go home with their own Bee Barn (think birdhouse, but for bees.)
- Prints and Bee Barns painted by Mary Lacy for sale to support Pollinator Pathways, a program that promotes native pollination awareness and conservation. It is run by the folks from The Farm Between.
- Kids and adults are welcome, with a suggested donation of $5 to cover materials for the barns.
